5 WAYS TO AVOID BACK PAIN THIS SUMMER

Did you know that hot weather and severe humidity may result in serious discomfort for individuals who have chronic back pain? When summer arrives, changes in barometric (atmospheric) pressure and humidity levels occur, which can lead to increase back pain levels and inflammation for anyone who has disc issues. However, while there are many people who experience increased pain in the summer, there are others who do not experience any change in their overall level of comfort.

If you are affected by weather changes associated with the summer season, the following are five ways to avoid back pain:

  • Frequently use your air conditioning system. Having your home’s temperature consistently cool and comfortable can ensure that your back pain levels are at bay. It’s imperative to understand which temperature setting works for you. You can also use additional fans to maintain the cold temperature in your home.
  • Maintaining hydration. Dehydration can actually trigger back pain. By drinking plenty of water and staying hydrated is important to prevent pains and aches. Other alternatives include other clear liquid, popsicles, iced tea, and even hot tea.
  • Participate in cool activities. Movement can help you remain limber and prevent stiffness derived from inactivity. If movement eases your chronic back pain, swimming can be a great way to stay physically active while staying cool. However, if you engage in activities which are performed outdoors or require a lot of effort, schedule them either early in the morning or just before the sun sets.
  • Wear comfortable clothing. Dress yourself in heat-friendly fabrics, such as cotton or linen. In addition, wear light colors instead of dark ones. Avoid wearing silk or wool, since both of these fibers retain body heat.
  • Entertain yourself. Staying indoors and avoiding the heat can be boring. Read a book or watch a movie to avoid thinking about your back pain while you’re in your home.
