Foraminal stenosis is a condition that occurs when the vertebral foramen, which contains the spinal cord, is compressed and becomes more narrow. This condition can occur over time, or as a result of some other spinal condition. When the foramen narrows, the spinal cord is pinched, and this can lead to a number of painful symptoms.

Foraminal stenosis can occur along any part of the spine but is most often found in the neck or lower back.

HOW DO I KNOW IF I HAVE FORAMINAL STENOSIS?

If you think you’re experiencing foraminal stenosis, you can consult with us at Alexander Bone and Spine Institute to determine your condition. It is most common to experience tingling or numbness in the affected areas, and you might also feel discomfort, numbness, or tingling in your extremities.

When the condition worsens, your symptoms may become stronger and can lead to further weakness and loss of sensation.

There are several spinal conditions can cause the narrowing or shrinking of vertebral foramen:

    • Bone spurs or other spinal debris
    • Arthritis in the spine
    • Enlargement of a joint
    • Swelling or inflammation of surrounding tissue

WHAT IS THE RIGHT TREATMENT FOR ME?

If you have been diagnosed with foraminal stenosis, our first course of treatment is usually conservative in approach. Treatments might include the following:

    • Physical therapy
    • Exercise
    • Massage
    • Acupuncture
    • Anti-inflammatory medication

If more conservative pain management treatments have not provided you with relief, your doctor may recommend surgery. Typically foraminotomy or laminoforaminotomy surgeries are used to help correct foraminal stenosis, but you will need to discuss your options with your specialist.

If you think you are suffering from foraminal stenosis and would like to discuss treatment options, you can contact us today at Alexander Bone and Spine Institute!
