NECK PAIN: WHEN SHOULD I WORRY?

Most of us will suffer from stiffness and aching pains in our neck at one point or another in our lives. Nerves run from our brains to the rest of our bodies, and seven vertebrae are cushioned between the discs. Our neck is a vital part of our body, and while many of us do suffer from neck pain every once in a while, we also tend to ignore it or dismiss our symptoms altogether.

When should you worry about your neck pain? How can you tell the difference between an average stiff neck and actual damage?

Pay attention to these symptoms of serious neck pain:

  • Headache
  • Weakness in the arms
  • Throat pain
  • Fever
  • Muscle pain
  • Numbness
  • The pain grows progressively worse
  • The pain coincides with another medical condition
  • The pain immediately followed an accident
  • Tingling sensation or “pins and needles.”

While pins and needles should not be immediately alarming, it may be a sign that of a nerve problem, specifically that the nerve may be irritated. You can always ask our Miami spine surgeon at Alexander Bone and Institute about your specific symptoms. It is our hope that we can address the problem at the onset and prevent the problem from worsening. We can also offer you recommendations that may alleviate minor neck pain.
